Sustainable Engineering Solutions Incorporating the Triple Bottom Line in NYS:
The future of engineering solutions have to incorporate a sustainable approach towards solving problems. In this challenging economic climate, engineering professionals need to identify solutions that are cost-effective, environmentally preferable and have a positive impact on communities. New York State has invested in the NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at the Rochester Institute of Technology to work in collaboration with academia, industry and communities on developing solutions that incorporate the triple bottom line. NYSP2I has 5 core programs to carry out this mission including R&D, direct client assistance, community grants program, professional training/workshops and sector projects, including a greening hospitality initiative and a wet cleaning program for dry cleaners. NYSP2I also utilizes sustainability tools such as alternatives assessment, life-cycle assessment and Lean, Energy & Environment (LE2) to assist companies in designing for the environment, optimizing their processes and reducing their costs and environmental footprint. This presentation will focus on successful case studies & tools used to incorporate pollution prevention solutions in NYS and an overview of the E3 (Energy, Environment & Economy) initiative in Tonawanda, NY on becoming a more sustainable community.
